  1. What should I wear to my first class?

    We offer Gi and No-Gi classes, see schedule for more details.

  2. Is there any specific etiquette I should be aware of?

    Practice good hygiene, keep nails trimmed, and uniforms washed.

  3. How are classes structured?

    All classes start with a warm up, followed by instruction, and drilling techniques.

  4. What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi classes?

    Uniforms/Gis are  not worn during No-Gi classes. Instead we wear rash guards and gym shorts without pockets or zippers.

  5. How often should I train as a beginner?

    2-3 days per week is sufficient.

  6. How does the belt promotion system work?

    Promotions are based on time on the mat and the ability to demonstrate proficiency in techniques at the various levels.

  7. What can I do to improve outside of class?

    Conditioning exercises and stretching will be important

  8. Do I need to bring my own water or are there facilities available?

    We encourage you to bring a water bottle

  9. Is there a risk of injury?

    Like any martial art or combat sports there is risk of injury. At Unity we train as a team and practice safety first, thoroughly explaining the risks involved with every technique.

  10. How can I learn the terminology used during class?

    Search common Jiu Jitsu techniques and terminology on Google

  11. Do you have changing rooms and shower facilities?

    Yes we have two restrooms and a separate dressing room.

  12. Do you offer private lessons?

    Yes

  13. Is sparring mandatory in every class?

    It is not mandatory, but we do encourage practitioners to test their technique in live sparring.

  14. What should I do if a technique is too difficult for me?

    Ask questions, there are often ways to modify techniques.
